  • 10:23 AM Phil Smith on RI senator passes on binding arbitration votes

The beat goes on, and the RI population falls, leaving behind only the poorest of the poor. Hmmm, I wonder what teachers will do when they lose their jobs because there are no more kids to "teach". Tassoni will probably legislate a new retirement deal to let them goof off upon the day of layoff. Come to think of it, they already have.

One small problem with Sen Tassoni's claim. HE SPONSORED THE BILL.

  • 12:42 PM Skwerl on Assembly hikes mandatory school attendance to age 18

Not all teens will benefit from more time in a classroom setting. Like the Providence Teacher said...it's the parents' job to raise their children, and it should also be the parents' job to determine whether or not their child belongs sitting behind a desk for two extra years. Many kids will do better in an apprenticeship, or simply getting a job. For those who aren't academically inclined, getting a job is all they will probably do after graduating at 18, anyway. It's not like all kids are college bound....not even most kids are college bound. We don't have money and resources to teach the kids who are already in school. Where will the money and resources come from to teach the kids who don't want to be there? Enough with Big Brother dictating how children are raised. Government should stop meddling with family life. Call or email Governor Chafee and ask him to please, please, PLEASE veto this bill. I've already done so more than once.

Right from the mediators own mouth. He is pro union. No ethics in R. I. With guys like Tassoni, if binding arbitration where to be implemented the State would immediately go in to Bankruptcy. I hope that all the people would read this article and realize this would not ever be fair mediation. Talk about a conflict of interest !!

What do you do when a senior graduates at the age of 17, and their 18th birthday isn't until December? Make them go back to school until their 18th birthday? This law is stupid and not well thought out. Maybe some extensive research should be done to find out how many students statewide dropout early and if this bill is even worth being considered. My guess the dropout rate is less than one percent. C'mon legislatures, get a grip and start focusing on the important issues for our state, like legislators health care and benefits!!!

This is a ridiculous ruling. If a kid does not want to stay in school after the age of 16 what do you think they will get out of being forced to stay until 18? Basically you will then have teachers babysitting uncooperative students at the detriment to the other students. Also for many high school students after 2 years they are pretty well boarded with HS. Haven't we learned anything about the educational system in this country? Let those kids go out and find a job or a trade that will allow them to actually learn something that they can find useful. All kids that do not want to be in school after 16 are not drug addicts. You can not force a square peg into a round hole and we should not be trying to. In my opinion many of them are just ready for something more challenging. They are not all headed to college nor should they be. College can turn out to be more of the same only more expensive. It is time we focus on something that will actually help our state and the dismal situation we find ourselves in. Stop wasting our time and money.

  • 12:52 AM Providence Teacher on Assembly hikes mandatory school attendance to age 18

Pete, It's the PARENTS' job to make the "kid" go to school, not the teachers or the school police. Kids don't like to do a lot of things that they need to, like chores, homework, eating vegetables, going to bed at a reasonable hour. It's the PARENTS' job to teach them right from wrong, and how to grow up to become a productive member of society. If PARENTS don't want to go through the trouble of doing their job, they either should not have children, or should give them to someone who wants to raise them.

The kid does not want to be in school. He/she does not go to school. He/she is 17 years old. How do we make the kid go to school? What do the school police do to make the kid go to school? Do we have jail schools where kids are forced to learn stuff for their own good? Stupid is as stupid does. Good intentions aren't enough. Figure that out now.

Mr. Robinson says, Children, can you spell land grab? Does your daddy have pull? If he does, real estate is available. If you do not understand what I just said, move to another state. The air is very bad here.

Your comment is insulting, crude and uncalled for and has no place in a ProJo blog. If you want to criticize people, that fine , but do it with class, not sewer innuendos.

I worked with Beryl at the City of Providence and she is very good at what she does. She is honest and a great writer. Not everyone who worked for Cianci was crooked. She is in her mid 60's and a grandmother so I doubt anyone would give her a job based upon anything but her professional abilities. Costantino was smart to pick her up.

Hey now, let's be fair to the lady. Do you know how difficult it is to find a decent paying job in the "Screw Over the RI Taxpayers While Making a Good Paycheck for Doing Hardly Anything and Getting a State Pension I Don't Deserve" field is nowadays? I'm sure she was a wonderfult "mouthpiece" in the A.G.s office... if you know what I mean, and I'm sure she'll use those talents well for Steven Costantino.

Typical! The Health and Human Services Department (racket) hired somebody's 'pet' for a useless position. Too many head honchos, not enough essential staff, all to placate their cronies.

Simply amazing, how "cronies" are coming out of the woodwork, and getting State jobs, from Chaffee, who ran on not owing anyone political "favors". Crooked is, as Crooked gets!
