PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence mayor and 1st Congressional District candidate David N. Cicilline received a co-byline Friday with San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom on Huffington Post.
The op-ed piece urges Congress to extend the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families Emergency Contingency Fund, which is set to expire on Sept. 30.
"In San Francisco, since May 2009, more than 3,800 San Franciscans have been put back to work" through the program, while "more than 365 people hired" in Providence since February 2010, the mayors write.
The piece continues: "Democrats and Republicans alike know that keeping people working is far better for our economy and for our local communities than pushing people into unemployment again. San Francisco and Providence and many other communities have leveraged these federal stimulus dollars to put people back to work, exactly as intended. This is a federal stimulus program that works."
Cicilline campaign spokesman Richard Luchette said both mayors wanted to "bring as much attention as possible" to the issue and decided that writing for Huffington Post offered an opportunity to do that.
