Congressional candidate David A. Segal picked up an endorsement Monday from Democracy for America, a progressive political action committee that claims more than a million members nationwide.

"David is an activist at heart -- working closely with his colleagues to craft progressive legislation and pass it into law," the organization's chair, Jim Dean, said in a news release announcing the endorsement. "His experience and record speaks for itself."

The PAC plans to support Segal with "money, media and volunteers."

"DFA has helped elect nearly 600 progressives up and down the ballot, including Joe Sestak in Pennsylvania and Elaine Marshall in North Carolina," the news release said.

Segal, a Democratic state representative from Providence, is one of eight candidates in the race for the state's 1st Congressional District seat. The field includes four Democrats, two Republicans and two independents.
