A second Republican has entered the race for governor.
Victor G. Moffitt, a tax accountant and former state representative from Coventry, announced Thursday that he is running as a "common-sense fiscal conservative" who plans to roll out an updated version of what he calls the three R's: reduce, replace and reform.
Moffitt, 60, made the announcement at his office on Main Street, in Coventry, which will also serve as his campaign headquarters.
He enters a crowded field that also includes Republican John Robitaille, Democrats Frank T. Caprio and Patrick C. Lynch and independent Lincoln D. Chafee.
A veteran of the Vietnam War, Moffit served in the Air Force from 1969 to 1972 and later attended Johnson & Wales University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in accounting. He served three terms in the General Assembly, from 2002 to 2008.
He and his wife, Bertha, have four children and eight grandchildren.
