There will be no change in the presidency of Rhode Island's largest union of state workers.
Facing no opponent, J. Michael Downey was unanimously elected Saturday to his second four-year term as president of Council 94, the American Federation of State, County & Municipal Employees. The vote took place at the labor coalition's annual convention at Rhode Island College.
Because union rules allow for nominations the day of the election, Downey wasn't sure until the day of the election that he was running unopposed. There was cause for concern, given a host of high-profile clashes with the governor and legislature in recent years that left rank and file members facing layoffs, pension cuts, deferred paydays, higher health insurance costs and low morale.
"During my first term, public employees have faced a sluggish economy, legislative attacks, and difficult contract negotiations," Downey said in a statement following his victory. "Even during these tough times and challenges, Council 94 has continued to build a stronger union through improved organizing campaigns, political action/lobbying programs, and membership communications.
"In the next four years, the officers and executive board will focus on making Council 94 a more powerful and vigorous voice for public and private sector workers throughout Rhode Island."
