WASHINGTON -- President Obama issued this statement today about U.S. Rep. Patrick J. Kennedy's decision not to seek reelection this year:

"Through his eight terms in the United States House of Representatives, Patrick Kennedy has worked tirelessly on behalf of Rhode Island families.

"Congressman Kennedy has been a leading advocate in the work of improving health care, supporting small businesses, and strengthening our education system. And after years of effort, he succeeded in passing landmark mental health parity legislation that required fair treatment for the millions of Americans who cope with mental illness.

"Michelle and I thank him for his service to the state of Rhode Island and to our nation, and we wish him all the best for the future."
