By Steve Peoples The political arm of the Democratic National Committee is working in Rhode Island and across the country today to dial up the pressure on Congress to adopt a health-care bill. Two coordinated events have been scheduled in the Ocean State by the Obama campaign off-shoot group, Organizing for America, which recently drew fire from state Democratic Party chairman William Lynch for operating independently, outside the "existing state party structure." Lt. Gov. Elizabeth Roberts will headline an Organizing for America health-care roundtable discussion at the Providence Public Library at 4:30 p.m. today. This evening, OFA volunteers will launch a phone bank at the Brown Bookstore College Hill Cafe. The actions are part of a coordinated push by the organization to host similar events across the country and "set a record of 100,000 calls to Congress placed or committed to in a single day nationwide," according to a statement issued by the Democratic National Committee. President Obama is set to address OFA volunteers during a live Web cast tonight at 7:45. Organizing for America has a presence in every state and recently hired recent Brown University graduate Emilie Aries to serve at Rhode Island state director. Their evolution has sparked some controversy. Rhode Island Democratic Party Chairman William Lynch sent a letter to several party leaders, including Rhode Island's Congressional delegation, noting that "numerous Democratic state chairs throughout the country who were not, frankly, overly enthused by the plans to unleash OFA across the country." "As the Rhode Island Democratic State Chair, I did not think then, nor do I think now, that it is generally advisable nor beneficial to have a separate and distinct Democratic political organization working in the state of Rhode Island as opposed to joining forces with our existing state party structure," Lynch wrote. "This, however, was not a decision that was left up to me by OFA and, in fact, I have had virtually no input into OFA's plans here in Rhode Island."

The Democratic Party highlights the dangers of blind obedience. Those who have been elected to represent the citizens of Rhode Island have instead chosen to represent Obama. We. Are. Screwed.
