By Karen Lee Ziner CRANSTON, R.I -- Ivan G. Marte, chairman of the Rhode Island Republican Hispanic Assembly, says he has quit the GOP out of embarrassment at South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson's outburst during President Obama's address to Congress last week. Wilson shouted 'You Lie,' when Obama remarked that illegal immigrants would not receive benefits under his health care plan. "I do not want to continue being a member of a party in which the members of the party express themselves in that way," said Marte, 59, of Cranston. In a phone interview, he called Wilson's behavior "shameful" and "uncivilized." But Marte said Wilson's outburst was the last straw in a series of disappointments that led him to break with his party. Marte became "disenchanted" with Governor Carcieri after the Republican governor sought his advice -- and then ignored it, Marte said -- concerning the 2008 executive order cracking down on illegal immigration. Carcieri's order angered many in the Hispanic community. Marte suggested Carcieri visit Hispanic families in their homes; meet with Hispanic community leaders, and answer questions on Hispanic talk radio. "I think once I left the office, they must have thrown it [his suggestions] in the garbage," Marte said. "I haven't heard back." He also said in the interview that the GOP "does not open the door to minority groups," and needs "to adapt" to a changing society. In a letter to GOP chairman Giovanni Cicione, Marte wrote: "It's with sorrow that I am morally obligated to resign my position as the Chairman of the RI Republican Hispanic Assembly, my post as a member of the Republican Central Committee, and my city registration to this party." Cicione said, "I'm disappointed when anybody chooses not to participate. It's clear that we valued his participation, because I appointed him to a leadership position with his party, which included a seat on the executive committee. I'm not sure what else we would have done." Cicione added, "I wish he would reconsider and choose to participate, and he would always be welcome to do so." Marte becomes the second Hispanic Assembly chairman to quit the party since the spring of 2008. David A. Quiroa, whom Marte replaced as chair of the GOP Hispanic Assembly, also quit in frustration over Carcieri's controversial executive order on illegal immigration. CommentsLeave a comment |

Bye bye - don't let the door hit you in the arse on the way out. We don't need people in this positions that cannot stand behind the LAWS of this country and the people that are trying to enforce them. As they say if you are not part of the solution then you are part of the problem.

Why would a black or brown person even be Republican in the first place. A racist party has nothing for you, move on.

I suggest that Carcieri visit White families in their homes; meet with White community leaders, and answer questions on White talk radio.

If you read the resignation letter, you will see it is an abomination of the english language. Maybe they will replace him with someone who can at the least use spell check before he sends a letter out.......

Another RINO out of the party. Maybe he feels better about a party that calls ObamaCare protestors Nazis and Astro-turf.

Good, another RINO gone from the conservative moment. We are heading in the right direction folks.

It appears this person was offended that the Governor didn't do what he suggested. Why would Ivan and such consider an alternate party when Obama and the Democrats shower them with goodies(at taxpayer expense) and make no effort to hold them accountable to abide by our laws and regulations?

Well, personally I'm sorry to hear that Mr. Marte resigned as we need the party to be diverse. There are a huge portion of hispanics that are natural born citizens or become citizens and while we may not agree that immigrants should come here illegally we understand it. We are not saying it is okay but again we understand. We also understand that since it is illegal, if you break the law it is not acceptable. There have been times that the tone & words people use when speaking out against illegal immigrants does have overtone of hate. It's okay to speak out against illegal immigrants but not to hate them. As a hispanic & a citizen of the US, I do understand the frustration re illegal immigrants as there are some who drain the system so I agree that the laws should be enforced.

We could solve the immigration problem with one swish of the pen. You want to come live in our country, then server in the millitary for 3 years and when you get out, your wife you and your children have citizenship. Problem solved.

Wow. With the number of beyond-the-pale comments I have read here (beaner, Mexifreaks, Carcieri meet with "Whites"), the GOP is increasingly being hijacked and is sealing its fate to a future dominated by extremists.
You think you'll be able to get people like this elected in RI, or anywhere outside of the rural south? Think again.
Maria, simply put, a lot of the people who have posted here absolutely do not want to have you in the GOP.

Republicans are not racists. The deomcrats are the ones with a history of racism. Read your history. Also, the democrats keep minorities down by giving them everything at taxpayer expense, instead of letting them grow and break the chains of poverty. Too bad he left his party. But in the long run, you don't want a party that encourage breaking the law like the democrats.

I wrote about being a Black republican (click my name).
An earlier commenter wrote that the GOP has nothing for minorities. That's truly a lie being sold by what I call "The entitlement gang". First, Wilson's comments were completely inappropriate. However, they were not racist. He simply stated his belief the president was lying about illegal immigrants being included in the healthcare program. It's his right to hold that opinion and he should express it, just not the way he did when he did.
To me, at its root, the Republican party is about empowering people and providing for an environment that allows life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness without constraint. The RI GOP in this state has been very backwards for a long time and lost many people, more recently, during the Chafee debacle in 2006.
However, Republicans can and will win in this state. The governor is an example of the indepent thinking of RI voters and certainly should be used to demonstrate the ability of the GOP to make this a two party state. There's a lot of work to do, but it's easy to jump off a ship under fire. I've chosen not to and hope to convince other minorities that being a "minority republican" isn't an oxymoron.

That leaves 22 people still in the RI Republican party. Your rhetoric is simply hate and there is no place for it here.9

I feel sad for some of these commentator's children, growing up in such hateful, ignorant, racist families. They're so knee-jerk reactionary, they don't even know they're racist, and their kids will grow up indoctrinated with this garbage. It's really sad there are still people who think like this, and judging from the comments, these are not very intelligent people.

Yeah lets have permanent affirmative action where illegals get preference over american citizens. Affirmative action is reverse discrimination and the white liberals of future generations will not get into any good schools either. With liberal supreme court justices with our new one party system whites will be the minority and continue to be discriminated against with affirmative action. This country discriminates against whites. We have massive illegal immigration that is making our politics more like venezuela's. If you are a white male who was just born forget about getting into any good university.

Why does anybody care about this? Rhode Island's Hispanics are MARRIED to all the Democratic party hopefuls to such as degree it is sickening. This dude represents a small handful of an already small group of people. The "Hispanic" community is nothing but about forty or fifty people who routinely turn up in the media because all of the nearly 100,000 of the rest of them are busy working, trying to make lives for themselves and their children and thus cannot show up at the lame public gatherings of all the PACS and Chambers that this elitist bunch of wannabees puts forth. No worries about this these people can't get anything done they just scream a lot.

This just proves of how racist all these conservatives and Republicans are. Most of them are way too afraid of Hispanics to admit that they're racists, but you're starting to see more and more of them, at least they like to pop off at the mouth on the Internet, but they wouldnt on my street

This is the classic throes of a majority in its last days. In less than 50 years the whites in the US will be a minority and culturally it will be a difficult transition.
As for the person's suggestion at obligatory service, I wonder if they think the same should apply to natural born citizenry? Or that perhaps we should just send the brown/black/yellow/red people off to die?
Dan, you are classic.
"This country discriminates against whites!"
That's simply delusional.
You know, polls in the late 50s/early 60s consistently showed that most white Americans felt that black Americans were treated the same, if not better, than whites; that they got better educations and better job opportunities and that racism wasn't much of a problem. That's what they thought they saw. Which is obviously crazy, as this was before modern civil rights laws even existed. Interestingly, those numbers have stayed just about the same. But how is that possible?
Could it be that maybe a chunk of the nation is in such deep denial that they just can't judge this subject rationally? That they not just don't, but CAN'T? And have NEVER been able to?

To dan: Dear Dan, Affirmative Action has been a real blessing to quite a few groups of previously disenfranchised American citizens. With that said, I suggest you go check available data to find out just which group of US citizens it has benefited the most. I'll give you a hint, it hasn't been Blacks or Latinos(Men and Women). The biggest beneficiary of Affirmative Action has been White Women. So get off of your BS and do a little research before you start mouthing off about something you don't have any facts to support. Even during this current recession, white women are still not feeling the effects of it as severely as men of all racial groups and women of all other racial groups. Last time I checked US Labor Dept numbers, the unemployment rate for white women stands at 7.7% which is the lowest rate for any group of Americans and the only group below the national unemployment rate. Not only does this apply to unemployment it also applies across the board for any other data set you want to apply it to. So stop spouting your disinformation and do a little research for the facts.

Hey Ivan,
Good riddance. You are a hack that tried to throw neighbors of your employer under the bus. The next time you need to cross a busy street, use the across walk and single light. That way you won't need to complain that you almost got hit by a car.

"kathy said: Republicans are not racists. The deomcrats are the ones with a history of racism"
From a simpletons perspective I guess that would be correct. What you fail to mention is that Civil Rights legislation was passed by progressive Democrats and Republicans from back when both parties had conservative and liberal wings. After 1965 the southern Democrats started moved to the Republican Party in droves (the previously hated party of Lincoln). LBJ himself said of the South that the Democrats would lose it for 50+ years for passing Civil Rights laws.
Check the history of many old Republicans from the past 40 years and you will find that they were Democrats most of their lives. Strom Thurmond was a perfect example. He ran as a segregationist Democrat against Truman and became a Republican after the CR legislation passed.
The Republican Party is going through the spasms of a dying beast. It does not mean it won't elect people, it just means it is going to have a harder and harder time maintaining relevancy on a national scale while it shrinks to being a regional party. Out of it's ashes will be born a Fiscal Conservative party that removes the insane anti-non-white mentality, and the social conservative freak show. Until that happens hasta la vista baby!

I don't know about you guys but the first person to cry racisim is usually the racist.
I woudln't be so quick to call the GOP racists, its all the liberals with white guilt that try to squelch debate by playing the race card and race baiting. The Dems use race and class warfare to keep you where they need you, broke and powerless!!! WAKE UP!! The Dems are dirty and in bed with the unions and we Rhode Islanders pay teh ultimate price!!!
Jay, Unions may not be perfect but most all of the benefits and labor laws you cherish are the result of unions. 8 hours days, 5 day work week, overtime pay, paid vacations, paid sick leave, healthy work conditions and more came from the union movement. There are problems with the union movement, most of which has to do with lazy members and lack of understanding of history. Go study the Pinkertons and the violence used on workers by owners to break strikes and maintain control.
When humans are involved there will be corruption, but these past years have been a cesspit of Republican sex crimes and corruption. For the Democrats we dumped our bad eggs (Spitzer, Edwards, Jefferson), while David Vitter and Mark Sanford steam on trying to dodge accountability.
By 2040 whites will no longer be more than 50% of this country. Get ready because we have a lot of adjusting to do.

Here's a fun fact to consider. In RI we have what, 75 Representatives 38 Senators, and five elected officers.
That's a total of 118 people. Of those 118 only 11 are Republicans, or around 9%.
I suspect the next Governor won't be another Repubican. Linc Almond wasn't bad but Carcieri, he's just a Repug nightmare.
