The head of the Moderate Party of Rhode Island is claiming that enough valid voter signatures have been certified to put the party on the statewide ballot next fall.

Moderate Party founder Kenneth Block said the party members had collected 33,998 signatures, sorted by municipality, and submitted them to the local boards of canvassers for review.

By law, the party needed to have at least 23,589 signatures from registered voters. Block said based on calls to individual boards of canvassers to check on how many they have verified, the party has met its goal.

"Employees of the 39 local boards of canvassers across the state of Rhode Island have now collectively certified more than 23,700 signatures; more than enough to qualify the Moderate Party of Rhode Island as a recognized political party in Rhode Island for the 2010 elections," Block said.

He estimated that about a half-dozen boards were still going over their lists, and when they are finished, Block guessed the final number would be more than 25,000 signatures.

"Do you think the Framers of The Constitution would have intended for someone, such as yourself, a 'natural born subject' of The United Kingdom, to be eligible to be President of The United States? Isn't that why they mandated in The Constitution that The President must be a 'natural born Citizen' of The United States - born in The USA of parents, who are both Citizens of The USA? They wanted to ensure that the Commander in Chief of all US military forces had undivided allegiance to The USA didn't they, Mr Obama"?

Rhode Island certainly NEEDS any party OTHER THAN the current one in charge. Good luck with the moderate party. I am voting for them or the Republicans. Democrats have KILLED this state.

Excellent! I can't wait until the next election, hopefully there will be some surprises in store for the incumbents. These people need to remember who they work for. Nero fiddles while Rome burns...they are so busy creating Mr Potato Head license plates and trying to legislate morality (the ill advised closing of the so-called 'prostitution loophole'), there's no time to actually fix what's wrong with our state economically and politically. Their ability to bury their heads in the sand is eclipsed only by their ability to continue to get relected, at least partially on the basis of legislative grants targeted to their hometown constituents. "Oh, my guy is soooo awesome, he got a $5000 grant for the kiddo's little league; he's got my vote next time!" Never mind the fact that we're on the brink of bankruptcy.

The RI legislature needs more competition, and we the people need more choices. This is a step in the right direction.
