PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Downtown employees with a hankering for fruits and veggies are in luck.

The Department of Environmental Management-run farmers' market that once operated in an obscure Smith Hill location near the Department of Health has moved to more high-profile digs.

Held every Thursday, the weekly market is now located in an idyllic spot on the lawn of the State House, close to the Providence Place mall.

"We thought it would be an improved location," said Ken Ayars, director of DEM's agriculture division. "It's better for the public and better visibility."

The market, he said, is now more accessible to mall employees and those in downtown office buildings.

"We're really hoping to capture some of the foot traffic in front of the train station and Providence Place," Ayars added.

About six vendors are now signed up. The market will be open each Thursday through the end of October from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
