CRANSTON, R.I. - After many months on the road with his family, former Cranston Mayor Stephen P. Laffey is back in Rhode Island with a $97,936.83 political fund. He returned on Sunday, July 26. But Laffey, who sold his home at 63 Tallman Avenue on March 6, 2009, confirmed in an email that he is currently staying at his parents' house at 46 Belmont Road. The Cranston tax assessor's office lists the owners as: John J. and Mary T. Laffey. The quarterly report he filed with the state Board of Elections on Tuesday still listed Tallman Avenue as his address. In fact, he and his wife, Kelly, were still registered to vote from that address until mid-day on Thursday, while his cars were registered for tax purposes at Belmont Road, according to city officials. Laffey indicated he was in the process of updating his addresses. By the end of the day Thursday, he had changed his voting address to Belmont Road in response to inquiries, and said he would correct the information on his campaign filing - that wasn't actually due until the end of the day Friday - as well. And he did. He filed a new "notice of organization'' for his campaign committee that listed the 144 Westminster Street address and telephone number of Piccerelli Gilstein & Co., the Providence accounting firm where his campaign treasurer works, as the new address for his campaign committee. But Laffey's finance report contains other perhaps more significant information in terms of his political future. Laffey, out of office since he left Cranston City Hall in January 2007, still has $97,936.83 in his campaign account to launch another run for office should he be so inclined, as he has indicated in recent weeks with stepped up public and behind-the-scenes Asked again on Thursday, if he was considering a 2010 run for governor or any other statewide office, he said: "I'm not interested in running unless there are a significant number of people willing to change the crash course to financial death that RI is on. As I have said before, that is not evident. I love RI so I am just telling the truth about the fraud at the state house." For now, he seems keener on giving a mouthful by mouthful account of what he and his children have eaten since their return, including corned beef hash, eggs over medium, and Johnny cakes at Spoonem's, bagels and cream cheese at Café Bon Ami on Park Avenue, and pizza at Big Cheese & Pub on Reservoir Avenue. "Rhode Island has some big problems...food is not one of them,'' he observed. Laffey mounted a 2006 Republican primary challenge to then-U.S. Sen. Lincoln D. Chafee who won the primary, and then lost the seat to Democrat Sheldon Whitehouse in the general election. Republican-turned-independent Chafee is gearing up for his own run for governor. Laffey had the animal control officer kill over 20 dogs and cats when he was mayor of Cranston after the state vet said the animals were fine. He is power hungry, and he wanted to show that he has control over everything including animals. There are many people in this state that will not forget that terrible deed.

If we should be fortunate enough to have Steve Laffey run for governor of RI, I will recruit as many volunteers as possible so we can get the word out about the REALITY of RI's future if we do not change the status quo!
Please, Mr. Laffey, RUN for Governor! Now that would be the right Change we could Hope for!

Laffey may have p*ssed off some people (usually people with special selfish interests)BUT he surely turned the finances of the City of Cranston around in a positive direction. People who are milking Rhode Island dry with their own special interests will certainly disagree but, in a time when Rhode Island is ranked worst in the entire country for just about every economic indicator, we don't need a nice guy, we need a fixer. Steve certainly is an economic fixer. Count me in on supporting Laffey.

Laffey needs to get a job. He has a family to support. "Big mouth" politicians or those who run from the mouth turn me off. He is outrageous, a renegade who is just looking for attention, with little substance, and lots of meaningless words. We need intelligent politicians with a bit of conservatism who will think before he or she speaks or acts out. He is full of trickery. Those who speak loudest have little to say. When he was in office we all had to pay an additional tax and then he raised the taxes and then said we didnt need that addition tax payt. What did he pad his personal acct? For those who think he is wonderful, he must be a friend to you, otherwise your judgement regarding the character of people is definitely warped. Smarten up! I often think when a comment is written against the view of the journal, it doesn't get published.

Sorry, once around with that loudmouth was enough. This was the guy that also tried that ill-fated (and as it turned out, illegal) semiautomated speeding ticket program in Cranston. I didn't even know about the animal killings until I just now read about it above.
