This October, Rhode Island state Rep. Thomas C. Slater is set to receive a national NeighborWorks America Government Service award in Washington D.C. for his efforts to improve local housing. The Washington group will honor Slater for his commitment to community development and affordable housing, including the sponsorship of the $50-million housing bond approved by voters in 2006. But given that Slater is battling advanced cancer and may have difficulty traveling to the nation's capitol, NeighborWorks has changed its plan and will instead bestow the award next week, here in Rhode Island. The ceremony will be held at 3 p.m., Thursday, June 18 in the State Room on the second floor of the State House. The public is invited. NeighborWorks America is the business entity of the Neighborhood Reinvestment Corporation, a national housing redevelopment organization. CommentsLeave a comment |

Rep. Slater is one of the great voices of compassion for the less fortunate in our society. We are lucky to have him in our Assembly!
