PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Raises are in the offing for a handful of state officials.

On Tuesday, Department of Administration director Gary Sasse will hold a public hearing on proposed salary increases for the chief medical examiner; the executive director of the Emergency Management Agency and a newly created post within the Coastal Resources Management Council for a "marine infrastructure coordinator'' at a starting salary of $64,563.

Barring opposition, the hearing will result in a $17,000 raise for the state medical examiner, Dr. Thomas Gilson, to what is being described as "a more competitive'' $193,514 salary and a $4,130 raise for emergency management chief James D. Smith, from $85,220 to $89,350.

The administration will air a second set of proposals Thursday to create a new class of state job for "prevailing wage investigator(s),'' at a starting salary of $37,460, and raise the starting pay for a deputy chief medical examiner from $150,735 to $168,956 for "recruitment purposes.''

The hearings begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday in Conference Room B, on the second floor of the Department of Administration building. Thursday's hearing is at the same time in Conference Room C.

The people in this state should throw out these people and start over. "The Don" and his buddies make more that enough money why should they get another raise (the 1st was when they were place in the jobs by "The Don") when the taxpayers are on their knees just trying to keep up. As far as I'm concerned they don't even deserve the jobs to begin with and I haven't seen anything improving in this state. So if they don't do anything why even pay them to begin with, I'm sure there are many Rhode Islanders that are unemployed who could do the job and it would cost a lot less. Sorry I forgot then "The Don" wouldn't have any friends left. GET RID OF THEM ALL, THEY LIE.

It is an insult to tax payers of RI to even be discussing raises with the current state of affairs!
It is about time that administrators begin to set examples by forgoing increases during these tough economic times, and be reminded that many Rhode Islanders are unemployed and experiencing hardships beyond their control.
