As rumors swirled about when and if House leaders will hold a Democratic caucus to gauge political support for the soon-to-be released state budget, Majority Leaders Gordon D. Fox Thursday night assured colleagues it won't happen this week.

"We're going to plan to schedule something early next week," he told them on the floor Thursday, adding that members could expect notification of a caucus by phone this weekend, or perhaps on Monday.

Why the delay?

"There are still some outstanding issues with the Senate," Fox said. "Unfortunately, a lot of this stuff is very complex."

In one of Political Scene's favorite Gordon Fox quotes ever, the majority leader then added: "We're just trying to work a working framework in which to frame a discussion."

The timing of the Democratic caucus has taken on added meaning after tense moments this spring when the House rank and file resisted pieces of the leadership's mid-year budget rewrite.
