Mark Zaccaria is hoping the Red Sox can help him become a United States congressman.

Zaccaria, a North Kingstown Republican who was soundly defeated by Democratic incumbent Jim Langevin last November, knows he needs more money to compete in 2010. He raised just $53,498 in the previous election cycle, compared to Langevin's $804,924, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

That's where the Red Sox come in.

Zaccaria issued an electronic newsletter Wednesday morning (sporting what appears to be a new logo) announcing "a series of on-line auctions" to raise funds for the 2010 bid. The first item: two tickets to a Sox game in late August. The bidding starts June 8.

"A successful campaign has to offer more than just the satisfaction of doing something to help make government more responsive to its citizens. How about throwing Red Sox Tickets into the mix?" Zaccaria writes. "Please consider doing two things with one political action: Support fiscally conservative smaller federal government, and see the Sox at Fenway. Win - Win!"

While it might seem that Zaccaria has a long time to raise money, he's already well behind his likely opponent.

Zaccaria had just $1,430 cash on hand at the end of March, according to the Federal Election Commission. Langevin, meanwhile, had $176,282.
