Call it an only-at-the-State-House moment. As dozens of Rhode Island's jobless rallied on the sidewalk in front of the state Capitol yesterday, uniformed parking attendants dodged between them, valet parking shiny cars for a cocktail reception inside. The event was part of the Chamber of Commerce Coalition's annual legislative day, when chamber members are invited to the State House to mingle with legislators over wine and hors d'oeuvres. Chamber lobbyist Dave Carlin said the chamber paid for the valet parking to make it easier for members and attendees. "Anyone who goes to the State House has an awfully hard time finding a place to park," Carlin said. He reported that the event was a successful one, attracting more than 70 legislators.

As one of the organizers of the Chamber of Commerce Coalitions’ event, I am offended by the characterization of the event. Most of the business people in attendance were hard working small business owners, trying to survive in this tough economy and not the “fat cats” the story tried to portray with “shiny cars” and “to mingle with legislators over wine and hors d’oeuvres.
As Dave Carlin mentioned we offer valet parking because it is hard to find a place to park around the State House.
Instead of using descriptive adjectives, why not report on the fact that the business community which is often criticized for not being at the State House gathered to discuss issues with state officials in a networking setting.
