By Cynthia Needham For months he's flown under the radar. Now John Edwards, the former United States senator and 2004 vice presidential candidate, is coming to Brown University next month. It appears the speaking engagement is one of only a handful Edwards has made since admitting last year that he had an affair with an employee on his 2008 presidential campaign. His speech will be entitled "Beautiful America," though no further details about the talk are available. The lecture, sponsored by the Brown University Lecture Board, a student-run organization, will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, in the DeCiccio Auditorium at the Salomon Center for Teaching. Tickets will be open to students, faculty and staff on a first-come, first-serve basis. Space permitting, the event will also open to the public that night. Doors open at 7:15 p.m. CommentsLeave a comment |

Thank you God and Jesus Christ.
I am so happy that John Edwards is returning
to help in the fight for Universal Health Care and the Middle Class and against Poverty.

Edwards certainly has bee "flying below the radar", and for good reason. I was a staunch Edwards supporter during the primary, and was completely shocked by what he has done. I no longer find him credible...but I do support and stand by Elizabeth Edwards because she has always come across as a fighter, and I wish her good will.

I think that Edwards personal life and marriage status is none of our business. I am glad that he is retuing to the speaker circuit to advocate for labor unions and ending poverty. Although I am supportive of President Obama, I wish that Edwards was The President.

John Edwards' personal life and marital status are germaine and relevant. They are an accurate reflection of his true character. He is a lying and self-serving phony.

Jefferson fathered children with slaves. Kennedy had more affairs than can be counted. FDR died with a mistress at hand. Can anyone deny their place in history as some of America's greatest presidents? And dare we count the thousands upon thousands of cheating husbands and wives among the "common folk" of America? And while we're at it let's not forget some other president's moral failings. Barack Obama used cocaine. Now no one is defending morally questionable actions, just saying that he's human and humans make mistakes. It shouldn't negate any good he did, could have done or might still try to do. You're without fault of some kind, go ahead and throw those stones. Until a pure innocent comes along, can it.

Well said, Rev.St.Huck. Unfortunately, those in the public sphere need to meet a higher standard than the rest of us, something not easily done, as we've seen time after time.
How much better would Clinton's presidency have been if not for his personal actions, and how much more could John Edwards contribute? Let's "allow" him to contribute where he's needed, obviously that's in the interest of the greater good. He will have to look himself in the mirror and wonder how much more he could have done, but certainly the country should not suffer more for his failings . . .

Rev.St.Huck...you are so spot on!I really despise John for what he did to his "wife" but he totally deserves another chance. This is a man who never asked us to put him on a high pedestal but we as a people did voluntarily without realizing that he is a human-being will always make mistakes! We should blame ourselves for being too judgemental towards one another whether for the good or bad characters!

Please--John Edwards is a self-aggrandizing skeeve. He's not out there to lobby for universal health care. He's collecting a speaking fee and getting his glam puss before the public again, at a time when some of might forget that he used his poor wife's illness as a campaign prop, then cheated on her while she was ill, and lied through his teeth. He is a typical ambulance-chaser, just a tad prettier. Crawl back in your hole, John. If we want another family-exploiting, cheating, pretty boy Democrat, we've got Antonio Villaraigosa on the national stage now.

I cannot believe any organization would pay this loser's speaking fee. Unbelievable!

Yikes -- I can understand if some feel that infidelity disqualifies a man from the office of President (though I don't agree in the slightest), but you don't even think he's qualified to speak in public? I hope your high horses have seatbelts, because it's a long way down.
Personally, I have a deep respect for Senator Edwards for the attention he brought to poverty and health care during the primary. I hope this is a sign that we'll hear his voice on the issues again.

"This is a man who never asked us to put him on a high pedestal...." But that's the point (and the difference from Jefferson, FDR, JFK, etc.). By making Elizabeth and his marriage, his son Wade and his family, his commitment to them central in his story of "who I am," Edwards DID ask us to put him on a high pedestal. And so his fall from that pedestal is the rankest of hypocrisy. --- Also his disdain for the Dem Party and progressives in general, his willingness to risk it all -- our best chance in decades and the opportunity to start getting back to our country after 8 years of GWB -- goes right to the core of what you hope to find in a leader. He knew there was a risk of exposure and that, after Clinton and the sour taste he left, exposure could be fatal to the Dems chance at the presidency. But he chose to go ahead and run and try to win the nomination. What if he had gotten it? I was an Edwards supporter and find this heartbreaking, but don't try to tell me it's "none of our business" -- if things had worked out differently his hypocrisy and recklessness could have hurt all of us - badly.

I would like more details about Edwards' affair. I want to know everything. What positions did they try? Did they watch porn while they made love? Is Edwards a fan of water sports? These are important questions that demand answers. They demand answers!
There are many people who pretend they don't care about such issues, but they lie. They yearn to know. How do I know this? Well, I'm Jesus. I'm omniscient.

It's nice to see that John Edwards is coming to Brown. I'm an expatriate Rhode Islander now living in Chapel Hill, NC, and an early Edwards supporter. (My "dream ticket" was Edwards/Obama.) Folks around here view Edward's behavior as almost incomprehensible, narcissistic, and foolish. And they worry about the effect this affair had on Elizabeth. In spite of that, I - and many others - recognize that his commitment to the issue of poverty and his general intelligence can still make a contribution to our political discourse. Both he and Elizabeth have much to offer us -- and I hope they'll both have the opportunity.

Not our business to judge him,his wife is with him, it was private, let it go, give him a break, are we free from mistakes?

Monyi, exactly how much of a moron are you? This guy is the biggest liar since Blagoyevich, and your moron patrol can't wait to line up for more of his garbage.
You deserve every bit of the pain & idiocy that defines your life.

I can't believe you people are so stupid.
Why would you want a liar and a cheat to speak in front of our youth. Respectably people want respectable people to speak...you know someone you think highly of....one who has morals, principles, honesty, sincerity and personal responsibility.
He is a LIAR and a CHEAT....yes, it is not for me to judge....I am NOT judging...I am just saying it like it is....you know, the TRUTH.
You think he cares about the poor and down trodden...no, the only thing he is interested in is the MONEY and HIMSELF.
Next why don't you ask Osama Ben Lauden to speak...have you forgiven him....
Gee....some people live under a rock all their lives....get out from under there and see things as they are...look up universal health care...you know inform yourself before taking a stand on an issue.
As for helping the middle class...you think he cares about the middle class when he does not even care about his wife and children....give me a break....

Its a question of gravitas. All that glitters is not gold. JRE is a johnny-come-lately to the issues of healthcare, poverty, and even politics. He didn't even vote half the time before he ran for Senate. He certainly didn't know anything about poverty. He seized upon it as a campaign issue that would appeal to mid-America sometime during Pres 1 campaign and then started the Center on Poverty as a platform after the attempt failed. There are hundreds of people who possess more expertise than he has about most any issue, but because Americans seem to gravitate to the rock star persona, he gets the platform. If we took ourselves a little more seriously in terms of seeking answers and expertise, no one would buy tix to his little speaking engagements. Tell me why on earth a millionaire many times over would even consider taking a fee to talk about the "faht of his laaaff". It makes no sense.
