PROVIDENCE, RI -- Mayor David N. Cicilline has appointed Matthew Stark, the city's policy and legislative affairs director, to coordinate the administration of federal stimulus money. The mayor signed an executive order today establishing guidelines to ensure federal dollars authorized under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act are spent efficiently. Among those guidelines was the creation of a 15-member team, led by Stark, which will identify where to spend the money and set up a system for tracking resources and expenditures, according to a press release from the mayor's office. "It's critically important that we maximize these funds to their fullest potential to create jobs, rebuild our infrastructure and get our economy moving again," Cicilline said in a statement. "The executive order that I signed today will ensure that every single dollar is accounted for and invested wisely as we work towards strengthening our economy and ensuring the long-term prosperity of our city and state." The city's priorities for the stimulus money, as laid out in the executive order: CommentsLeave a comment |

So here is an opportunity for RI, especially Providence to do the right thing with this money. However, my questions are these. Why do you need a 15 member team to figure out where the money should go. Are these 15 people get paid from this stimulas package? It should be a volunteer panel. If there is an opportunity to screw this up it will happen in Providence if the proper oversight is not put in place. There should a federal overseer that is there to say yea or nea on where the money is spent. If one penny of this money goes into the pocket of a politician or special interest group, they should be prosecuted for misappropriation of funds, stealing, fraud, and sabotage. Yes sabotage. For getting in the way of a federally funded program to bring the economy back from hell and back on track. If one bad headline hits the press about this stimulas being misused, RI might as well put a for sale sign on every roadside billboard entering the state. Clearly the people we have in place now have not done the job of all the people, not just the people that live on there street or that they work with. Fix this mess or they're will only be one employer in this state and that will be the government.

I believe the 15-person team is made up of the Department Directors and administrators who will be directly impacted by the money coming from Washington. Example: Public Works will get money to fix roads, etc.
