Under state law, the governor is required to present his tax-and-spending plans by the third Thursday in January. Late yesterday, however, Republican Carcieri sent the General Assembly's Democratic leaders a letter in which he "respectfully'' requested an extension until Tuesday, Feburary 10 at the latest. "Thank you for your consideration and for your continued work on behalf of the people of Rhode island,'' he wrote. While lawmakers were unavailable to comment on his not unexpected request, they are unlikely to object, having just started hearings this week on Carcieri's $357-million deficit-cutting plan for this year. |
