With school cafeterias on the path to better nutrition, educators say it's time for students to take the healthy food message home. "There's really a disconnect between what's happening in schools and what's happening at home," said Rick McAullife, a lobbyist for food-service giant Sodexho. Several years ago, state lawmakers passed a bill requiring food service companies to do a better job encouraging nutrition in schools. Since then, the providers have worked with districts to bring healthier food options to lunchrooms across the state. But in many communities, good habits stop at the closing bell. Children accustomed to eating whole grains and vegetables for lunch may hit the junk food at night. Now lawmakers, together with Sodexo officials will launch a plan to increase nutrition education to Rhode Island students and their families, encouraging parents to partner in healthy lifestyles. Details of the plan will be announced at a press conference on Friday afternoon. Several legislators, including presumed Senate President M. Teresa Paiva Weed, are expected. The event will take place at 3 p.m. in room 313 at the State House.
