General Assembly gets back to business on Jan. 6

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The new session of the Rhode Island General Assembly is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, Jan. 6, at 4 p.m.

Secretary of State A. Ralph Mollis will deliver the oath of office in separate ceremonies in the Senate and the House.

As part of its opening proceedings, state representatives are expected to re-elect current Speaker William J. Murphy to that position. Murphy is expected to address House members following the vote.

Senators are expected to elect Sen. M. Teresa Paiva-Weed as president of the Senate for the new session. Paiva-Weed is expected to address the senators following the formal vote.

The session will be broadcast by Capitol TV (Channel 15 for Cox Communications and FullChannel and Channel 34 on Verizon FIOS).
