WASHINGTON -- The Supreme Court this morning will hear an important environmental case that hinges on the question of whether federal officials may consider the cost to a power company of compliance with rules meant to protect fish and their habitats. Rhode Island is among the Northeastern states that is a party to the case, which concerns the Indian Point nuclear plant in New York State but could affect the operations and customers of more than 500 utilities nationwide. At issue in the case is the power plant's cooling system, which pulls huge amounts of water from the Hudson River and kills masses of fish eggs, as well as certain small fish, in the process. |
