| Will battleground Virginia tilt to the Democrats? »
By Paul Edward Parker The Rhode Island electorate has taken a seismic shift toward youth and the Democratic party in the last year and a half. A Providence Journal analysis of the state's voter registration database shows 25,000 more registered voters today than in April 2007. But the ranks of voters younger than 30 swelled by 30,000 in the same period. The gains of youth came at the expense of age -- the number of voters 65 and older dropped by 11,000. Other age groups showed modest increases. Meanwhile, voters registering as Democrats ballooned by 53,000, mostly a shift away from voters who did not affiliate with a party, whose count fell by 27,000. Republicans lost about 1,000. Why not tell the whole story?
Voters registered as Democrats ballooned by 53,000 because there was a Democrat primary. People who are normally unaffilated with a party showed up to vote at the Democrat primary. They affiliated ever so briefly, voted, then prompty disaffiliated, like they always do.
