PROVIDENCE -- With the state's budget in hot water, Rhode Island lawmakers are trickling back to Smith Hill to start crafting solutions. First up, the governor's office will meet tomorrow afternoon with Senate Majority Leader M. Teresa Paiva Weed, who has received the nod of her fellow Democrats to become the Senate president, Carcieri spokeswoman Amy Kempe confirmed this afternoon. Kempe said the governor is still trying to arrange a time to sit down with House Speaker William J. Murphy to discuss the state's financial situation. The governor was in Florida last week and did not return to Rhode Island until yesterday. Meanwhile, the House Finance Committee has announced the full committee will convene Monday for the first time in several months for a staff presentation on the status of this year's budget and on next year's spending plan. That meeting will take place at 1 p.m. in room 35 at the State House. No word yet on whether the General Assembly will return for a special session before its scheduled start in January. |
