LACONIA, N.H. -- Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the Republican vice presidential nominee, this afternoon drew similarities between residents of her state and New Hampshire, from moose hunting to dog sledding, as she appealed to voters here three weeks before Election Day. In a 30-minute speech that cast the GOP's White House bid as an underdog, Palin, the running mate of John McCain, said it would be "down to the wire." At another point she said, "Granted, we're coming from behind, but it can be done with your help." Palin said people of her state and those of New Hampshire have much in common. "You seem to be a lot like the people of Alaska -- so independent," she said. Palin and U.S. Sen. John E. Sununu, R-New Hampshire, arrived in the community's Weirs Beach section, parking the blue Straight Talk Express bus next to a stage from which Palin spoke with Lake Winnipesaukee behind her. Sununu is in a tight Senate race with Jeanne Shaheen. A "drill, baby, drill" chant went up when Palin spoke about the issue that in this election cycle has taken on the name of energy independence. She repeated it back to the crowd: "Drill, baby, drill. You betcha, yes!" Palin supporters who were interviewed expressed a general sentiment that she connects to them because she is a regular person. Gene Zarella, a 37-year-old Gilford, N.H., resident who attended with his wife and two daughters, said of Palin that "she seemed real" and added: "She's a real reformer. We need regular people going to Washington." Zarella referred, for instance, to the mother of five children belonging to the Parents-Teachers Association. -- projo.com staff writer Michael P. As soon as she figures out New Hampshire isn't in the northwest, she should be all set.
