Rhode Island College in Providence will host a public forum on tonight's presidential debate between Republican nominee Sen. John McCain and Democratic nominee Sen. Barack Obama. Sen. McCain had called for a postponement of the debate until Congress could agree on legislation to bailout the country's troubled financial institutions, but the Associated Press is now reporting that he will participate. The event is free and open to the public. It will start with a town hall meeting at 7 p.m. at the Donovan Dining Center to discuss issues important to this year's election, then the group will watch the debate between 9 and 10 p.m. After the debate, audience members will share their reactions through focus groups and the results will be reported to the Commission on Presidential Debates. The Secretary of State's office will be at RIC's Donovan Dining Center registering voters prior to tonight's DebateWatch festivities. RIC is one of three college campuses we will visit over the next few days as part of our push to get younger voters to the polls in 2008.
In order to register, you must be at least 18 years of age by Nov. 4, a U.S. citizen, a resident of Rhode Island and have a valid social security number or Rhode Island driver’s license. Registering to vote is free.
In addition to targeting first-time voters, the drives give registered voters who have moved or changed their names a convenient way to update their records as required by state law.
We will also be at Bryant University's Unistructure on Monday, Sept. 29, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and URI's Providence campus on Wednesday, Oct. 1, from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
People who are already registered to vote in Rhode Island should use our Voter Information Center to confirm that their voter registration information is accurate. By state law, registered voters who have moved or changed their names must update their records in order to cast ballots in November.
