The Rhode Island Association for Justice plans to give its Citizen of the Year Award to U.S. Sen. Jack Reed today.

The group, formerly known as the Rhode Island Trial Lawyers Association, is having its 22nd annual reception at the Providence Biltmore Hotel tonight.

"Senator Reed has consistently advanced legislation in Washington to accomplish the same goals we work for on behalf of our clients -- protection from unsafe products, rights to housing and education, better medical care in our emergency rooms and for our children, research to fight cancer, to name only a few," the association said. "In addition, Senator Reed has actively supported basic legal rights such as the right to habeas corpus and limits on government surveillance."

The association also is giving its Judicial Merit Award to Superior Court Judge Judith C. Savage "based on her breadth of knowledge and her demeanor as being fair and judicious to the litigants and to the attorneys who appear before her."

Miriam Weizenbaum, of the Providence law firm DeLuca & Weizenbaum, is to be sworn in as the association's president for 2008-2009. She will succeed Mark Gemma, of Gemma Law Associates in Providence.

Jack Reed took $428,356 from Lawyers/Law Firms this election cycle according to OpenSecrets.org.

Interesting.

Makes you wonder why they want him in there so bad, and why they give him so much money. We all know how honest lawyers are, so I'm sure it's just altruistic...

P.S. Write in Christopher Young for US Senate this November. And find out more at WhereToVote.com.

I contacted Reed's office about a constituent issue a few months ago, and they didn't even have the courtesy to get back to me.
