About 250 people have registered so far today for the National Speakers Conference that is drawing House Speakers from across the country, and their spouses and staff members, to Newport, according to Larry Berman, spokesman for the Rhode Island House.
The conference begins with a reception tonight at the Hyatt Regency Newport.
Between now and Sunday, the speakers and their retinues will be treated to golf, a clambake, a Newport mansion tour, a special WaterFire and dinner under the tent on the State House lawn in between speeches and private meetings, such as tomorrow's Speakers'-only session at Rhode Island's first State House in Newport.
