ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Some of the biggest excitement for Rhode Island delegates to the Republican convention this week fizzled this afternoon when Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's appearance at a long-anticipated gathering of abortion opponents was canceled.

"I think it was not a smart move on the part of the McCain campaign," said Phyllis Schafly, the conservative fixture who was among the organizers of the event, which is being held between 5 and 7 this evening.

"They said she was tired and getting ready for her speech tomorrow," Schafly said, "but I rather guess it was not her decision.

"All the same," said the leader of the Eagle Forum, "I think Governor Palin is the greatest thing McCain has ever done." The selection of Palin as McCain's running mate "has really invigorated the grassroots."

Kelly Hathaway was among half-dozen or so Rhode Islanders who groaned in unison when they heard the news that Palin would not make it to the reception.

She said she counted herself among the religious conservatives who have been Palin enthusiasts for months. "Well, we won and we lost, " said Hathaway. "I got the person I wanted for vice president, but I didn't get to see her -- at least until tomorrow night."
