Two big-league Democrats are heading to the smallest state.

Sen. Joseph Biden will be coming to Rhode Island on Thursday, Sept. 25, to raise money for Sen. Barack Obama's presidential campaign, and Sen. Hillary Clinton will be in the state this Friday, party and campaign officials said today.

Democratic vice presidential nominee Biden is scheduled to attend a reception at 7:30 p.m. at the Alpine Country Club, 251 Pippin Orchard Road, Cranston.

"People are excited about it," state Democratic Chairman William J. Lynch said. "When you hear a list of battleground states, you don't hear Rhode Island. So it just shows what the Obama campaign and Senator Biden think of Rhode Island. They want to stop here and make sure everyone knows Rhode Island is part of their team, and this is certainly a nice way to do it."

Lynch said he hopes the event will raise up to $1 million for The Obama Victory Fund. Tickets for the reception range from $1,000 to $5,000. For ticket information, go to www.ridemocrats.org or call the party headquarters at (401) 721-9900.

Raymond J. Sullivan, director of the Obama campaign in Rhode Island said Biden's visit "shows Obama-Biden doesn't take any state for granted. Not only are we going to be responsible for turning out our vote here, but we'll be supporting our friends in New Hampshire, a key battleground state."

Lynch also confirmed that Clinton -- Obama's main opponent in the Democratic primary contest -- is coming to an event Friday at the home of Alan Hassenfeld, chairman of the board at Pawtucket-based Hasbro Inc. He said that event is not sponsored by the party.

Mark Weiner Sr., a top party fundraiser and confidante of Hillary Clinton and former President Bill Clinton, said it is a fundraiser for Senator Clinton's political action committee, set for 1 p.m. at Hassenfeld's house in Bristol.
