Anyone who covers a convention has to marvel at how little the locals care about it. I'm staying in the Highlands, a funky Denver neighborhood of renovated bungalows. The residents are overwhelmingly of the liberal -- some might say "far-left"-- persuasion. But talk to people around here, and one learns that to them the nomination of Barack Obama is more an inconvenience than a milestone for the liberal history books. They wish the convention would go away, so that they could have their parking spaces back. This is only about two miles from the Pepsi Center and the Invesco Field at Mile High, where Obama is expected to address 70,000-plus Democrats tonight before a global television audience. You can hear the security helicopters buzzing overhead. Yet, last night at Mead St. Station, a packed Irish pub, patrons had the choice of two TV offerings. At one end was the Democrats' convention and at the other end was the Red Sox-Yankees game. About 90 percent of the eyeballs were pasted on the ballgame and not on the convention. When Bill Clinton got up to speak, I asked the waiter whether he could have the sound turned up, just for those few minutes. "No," he responded. "If we do that, we'll have to do the same for the Republicans." CommentsLeave a comment |

Why on earth would anyone care what Bill Clinton had to say?
