One of the pleasures of the peanut gallery known as the Writing Press Stand is to hear the nation's leading scribes rehearse the instant impressions that they will soon commit to the printed, or in some cases, electronic page.

So here last night in the North End Zone seats of the Denver Broncos football field was Charlie Cook, the influential proprietor of Washington's independent bible of campaign analysis, The Cook Political Report.

Cook told a neighbor as the music and the smell of fireworks faded minutes after the Barack Obama pageant that he had wondered beforehand whether such an extravaganza might be a problem for the Democratic presidential nominee.

"You know, is Obama filling up a big arena just because he can?," he asked.

But Cook said as the happy throngs filed towads the exits that he had a tentative judgment: "I think he pulled it off."
