Nader submitted 2,000 signatures of registered Rhode Island voters. Petitions containing the signatures of 1,000 registered voters are required to qualify for the Rhode Island ballot. Nader's campaign is scheduled to hold a news conference at the State House this afternoon to announce the filing.

Nader announced his candidacy on February 24 on the NBC television "Meet the Press" show. His running mate is Matt Gonzalez, 40, of San Francisco. Gonzalez is a fomer member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and unsuccessful candidate for mayor there.

The state has until September 11 to certify presidential candidates for the November general election, according to Chris Barnett, spokesman for the secretary of state's office.
