Mindy Myers, U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse's chief of staff, is taking a leave of absence to work on Barack Obama's presidential campaign.

Myers, 32, who was the campaign manager of the Rhode Island Democrat's successful 2006 campaign, will be the New Hampshire state campaign chief for Illinois senator's presidential campaign.

New Hampshire is a pivotal state in presidential elections. It is likely to be the only battleground state in New England. Most famous for its early presidential primary, the Granite State supported Republican Georege W. Bush in his 2000 race against Democrat Al Gore. Bush defeated Gore by about 7,000 votes in an election where third-party candidate Ralph Nader drained off about 25,000 protest votes that most Democrats believed would have gone to Gore.

New Hampshire has just four electoral votes, but had Gore won them in 2000, he would have gone to the White House instead of Bush.

In 2004, Massachusetts Democrat John Kerry defeated Bush in New Hampshire in an election where all six New England states voted Democratic in the presidential contest.

Myers said she was recruited by the Obama campaign to be the New Hampshire state campaign director.

She starts her new job on July 1. Her place in Whitehouse's office will be taken by Carlos Angulo, the senator's legislative director.
