GOP Rep. Moffitt won't run for 4th term

COVENTRY -- Calling some of his work at the General Assembly “frustrating,” Rep. Victor G. Moffitt, a Republican representing District 28, said he will not seek a fourth term.

Moffitt, 58, made his announcement yesterday, citing a desire to spend more time with family and his accounting business.

“The opportunity to serve on the House Finance and Veteran Affairs committees was especially rewarding, but at times also frustrating. Unfortunately for Rhode Island taxpayers, the final state budget each year is primarily determined by a handful of Democratic leadership and members of the House Finance have very little input,’’ he said in a statement released yesterday.

“Rhode Island veterans are not adequately supported by the majority of legislators. Most do not attend veteran events or support veteran activities. Veteran issues have been a priority for me, and I hope my successor continues to support veterans because they deserve it.”

Moffitt was elected in 2002 and has served six years as a state representative. His announcement came a day before the House Finance Committee was expected to release its budget proposal for the 2009 fiscal year.
