Little Rhody wields some big power in the nation’s capital, at least according to this year’s edition of the so-called “power rankings.”
Each year, Congress evaluates the performance of members of each chamber and calculates a ranking system. According to the congressional Web site, members were measured “on various criteria that demonstrated power and the ability to be effective in Congress in 2007 and 2008.”
Overall, Rhode Island placed 14th on the list of most powerful state delegations.
The Ocean State’s senior Sen. Jack Reed placed an impressive 17th in the Senate, with freshman Sheldon Whitehouse coming in 83rd.
On the House side, Patrick Kennedy also ranked 83rd, while James R. Langevin posted a ranking of 331st.
If Rhode Island’s performance sounds respectable, our neighbors to the north in Massachusetts have even more to brag about. Their delegation placed fourth overall, with Sen. Edward Kennedy commanding the number- two spot on the Senate’s list behind Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.
