PROVIDENCE -- The House Judiciary Committee is considering legislation that would ban straight ticket voting in Rhode Island elections.

Rhode Island is in a minority of states that allows straight ticket voting, which lets voters select candidates entirely from the same party with just a single mark or punch on their ballots.

Rep. Susan Story, a Barrington Republican, has submitted a bill that would ban the option, which she says allows Democrats to maintain overwhelming control in the General Assembly.

The Judiciary Committee was scheduled to hear testimony on the bill this afternoon at the State House.

Check the committee's agenda.

I WORK FOR A LIVING SO WHY WOULD I VOTE FOR A REPUBLICAN. IT IS MUCH EASIER FOR ME TO VOTE THE STRAIGHT TICKET OPTION THAN CHECK OFF EACH NAME. I HOPE THE PROPOSED LEGISLATION FAILS.

Nasty old Obama is asking poor Hillary to release her tax returns, as he has, and pointing out that when Bill stonewalled on his tax returns when Bill was running in 1992, he was hiding Hillary’s 10,000 percent cattle-futures trading “profit.”

Tom, If you are interested in how politicians affect your budget, keep in mind that it is the RI Democrats who have set up the very fat benefit packages for state employees, they you are paying for.

I am in total agreement with doing away from single party lever system for voting. It goes hand in hand with the Legislative grants thus telling the public that a favor or loyalty is expected in turn. That is not how a Republic should govern and the budget mess we are in reflects Democratic control and ineptness. I will be watching my Senator and Congressman on this vote, who are David Caprio and T. Sheehan. Thanks Nancy C

Tell Mrs. Republican to chill out. If the Republicans were right and really cared about their constituents, they would be in favor of the system.

Straight ticket voting is the greatest single impediment to a viable two-party system in Rhode Island. If one believes that competition is healthy for our political system, if one believes that people vote for people rather than for political parties, then one should support a repeal of straight-ticket voting.
