The state Democratic Party chairman today demanded a "retraction and apology" from Governor Carcieri for comments the governor made on a live radio program in which he questioned the need to have interpreters in courts and other state agencies.

Chairman William Lynch, in a news release, focused on the Republican governor's comment on the Helen Glover show: "Why are we, at taxpayer expense, providing interpreters for people who want benefits from us? It seems completely illogical to me."

Lynch said "it's hard to imagine saying anything more insensitive, or frankly, un-American."

Lynch added that Carcieri was elected to "be the governor of all Rhode Islanders, not just the people who look and speak as he does."

Carcieri's comments on the radio program were included in a Journal article today about state workers wondering who will lose their jobs under the governor's proposal to cut hundreds of positions to rein in a state budget deficit.

I completely agree with Don Carcieri. It seems to me this state encourages giving away too much aid including rediculous pensions and then wonders why we have serious budget problems. It's American to work and pay your own way.

I think Chairman Lynch has it backwards -- he should be apologizing to the Rhode Island taxpayers. Let's not forget that he is the "big toe" of the Democrat Party -- one who's policies have led us to the huge state deficit and created a revolving door of corrupt politicians. People need to wake up -- we are on the verge of bankruptcy in this state. At least Governor Carcieri understands this and is trying to make some hard choices to help all Rhode Islanders in the long run.

THIS MAN IS THE WORST GOVERNOR IN THE COUNTRY, ALL HE CARES ABOUT IS HIMSELF AND TAKING CARE OF HIS RICH BUDDIES. MARK MY WORDS, WHEN HIS LIST OF STATE WORKERS LAID OFF IS FINISHED IT WILL BE ALL LOW PAID POSITIONS. NOT A SINGLE AMINISTRATOR MAKING SIX FIGURES WILL BE AMONG THOSE AFFECTED.

I think it is clear-- Rhode Island-- Needs to let the Lynch's and the Democratic Party pay the tab for their stupidity! How absurd you come to my country, don't speak my language and I have to pay for an interpreter. I think Bill Lynch owes the people of this state two things-- An apology to our Governor who is certainly more a man than a Lynch can ever be and 2. It's time for Bill Lynch to resign

I for one do not believe an apology is due. If everyone was honest they would say the same thing that he said. We do not go to another country where they have funds available for us to learn their language. This country was founded and our language is ENGLISH. Where is it in any legislation that we have the obligation to teach anyone our language. If anyone wants to live in the US then they need to learn our language on their own. It is bad enough they come here and live on welfare, and now will possibly be entitled to Social Security and they want us to foot the bill so they learn the language?? Bravo Governor I am with you 110% and I know many many others feel the same as I do so please do not feel you owe anyone an apology.

No apology is due.

This is just classic Bill Lynch trying to get his name in the spotlight and garner votes from the illegal alien community to keep his buddies in office.

Where was he when 'Operation Dollar Bill' was in the news concerning alleged corruption by Montalbano and Alves or when Jerry Martineau was indicted? Probably hiding.

He only holds a press conference when he feels the need to attack Carcieri.

How typically Democrat.

OK, a few comments:
The Governor did not question the need to have interpreters in the courts or other agencies. He questioned the need for the state to PAY for interpreters for people applying for benefits. The Governor never called for the removal of interpreters from the judicial system. This is a lie, plain and simple.
The way the layoffs are going to be is because of the UNION CONTRACTS. As far as I know, the union contracts dictate that layoffs are in order of reverse seniority. Last hired, first fired. All those who are being laid off should remember that the legislature and judicial branches have said that they will not lay anyone off, so remember to thank them for helping with the budget deficit.
The Governor makes six figures, that's true. So do some police, fire fighters, and other needed public workers. Should we get rid of them? The governor is wealthy and he earned his money in the private sector not at the public trough. Why does being a successful businessman count against you if you are running for governor? He is the CEO of a company (RI), with sixteen thousand employees (state workers), and a two hundred million plus dollar deficit. Find me anyone who works for as little in the private sector and then we can talk.
Why should I feel guilty for doing well? Isn't that the American dream? Why is it wrong if I work hard and become rich? Bill Lynch uses the word millionaire in his press release about the governor like its an insult. What makes a person un-American? If I disagree with you I'm not a racist, bigot, anti-anything. I just have a different point of view.
Just a few comments about what I see going on. Maybe when the Democrat leaders are done name calling, finger pointing, and getting arrested and indicted they can get around to fixing the budget problem and leave the childish behavior on the playground.
