In the oops category, a hiring notice came down almost as quickly as it went up for a new $130,000-a-year cabinet-level director of the state’s yet-to-be-fully established Department of Revenue.

The application period was supposed to run from Oct. 15 through Oct. 26. But it ended before it began.

The posting would have opened the doors to applications for a new six-figure job in state government on the same day Carcieri was holding a State House news conference to announce layoffs.

Late Friday, Department of Administration Director Beverly Najarian sent Political Scene this explanation for the rescinded posting: “We continue to actively recruit for this position. It was rescinded on a technicality and will be reposted.” She said a top aide had been “recruiting with diligence on several fronts but has not successfully identified the appropriate and/or interested candidate.”

In an earlier exchange of e-mails, Najarian debunked rumors that Joseph Pomposelli, the onetime director of the governor’s business office, had won the new job. Technically, Pomposelli carries the $137,848-a-year title of director, Department of Revenue — Taxation,” according to the state personnel office.

But Najarian said Pomposelli has not, in fact, been put in charge of the new agency that absorbed the Lottery, the Division of Motor Vehicles and the Division of Taxation. Each still has its own director. She explained: “He was hired on 3/12/78,” and as such “Joe Pomposelli has statutory status — meaning we need to keep him employed at a comparable grade and salary.”

In recent years, she said, he has worked on a number of projects, most recently: “the evaluation of electronic imaging proposals, coordinating the rollout to cities and towns [of] the negotiated storage rates that Capital Records have agreed to extend to the cities and towns … a cost-savings idea related to the service of writs by the Sheriff’s Department.”

Just another in a series of appointmets to fill positions that the state does not need. High paying jobs given to friends are a theme with the elite. Crush the minions while I take care of my friends.
