Governor Carcieri’s new executive counsel, Kernan “Kerry” King, attended two of the three meetings that the Judicial Nominating Commission held last week to interview 14 candidates vying for a pair of District Court vacancies.

In recent years, executive counsels have rarely attended meetings held by the commission, which screens candidates for state judgeships. But King said, “I’ll try to attend as many as I can. The governor will rely very much on the commission and [Chairman] Steve Carlotti’s leadership. I’ll be asked to weigh in, and I’d like to see how people behave face to face. That’s more important to me than just looking at a resumÉ and finding out someone got an A in constitutional law 20 years ago.”

The state now has six judicial vacancies, and King said, “The governor will have the opportunity to make several important picks to the District Court and Superior Court. The governor takes these matters extremely seriously and recognizes how important it is to have the right people in our judicial system.”
