While A. Ralph Mollis won the secretary of state race last fall, his opponent is the one honored with a sandwich in her name at the coffee shop in the State House basement.
On their lunch break, State House workers can refuel with the “Sue Stenhouse bagel pizza,” a toasted bagel with tomato and provolone cheese.
Stenhouse, Governor Carcieri’s deputy director of community relations, was the Republican whom Mollis defeated in the general election after beating Guillaume de Ramel in a Democratic primary.
Stenhouse’s customary lunch request, made to order each day, was apparently so tantalizing that others in line started asking for it, too, prompting the coffee shop to add it to the menu.
The Stenhouse, which costs $1.65, is among the more popular offerings on the menu — which also includes a hamburger, grilled chicken, tuna salad and steak and cheese — according to Kristen Coffey, an employee of the Fogarty Center, the nonprofit that provides staff for the coffee shop.
Mollis said he picks up a sandwich in the coffee shop “a couple of times a week” and had noticed that Stenhouse had an item named after her. “I’m sure it’s popular,” Mollis said, “but I’m not going to come up with my own recipe unless they add a Guillaume de Ramel item to the menu, too.”
