On the day six state departments in Cranston, including Eleanor Slater Hospital, lost electrical power and phones because of an underground fire, Rhode Island government did not quite grind to a halt. Governor Carcieri's office still got the word out that day about how it would be getting the word out the next day ... ... about classic cars. The news release Monday afternoon, issued several hours after the governor's spokesman's release explaining the power outages and phone failures, said the governor would hold a news conference yesterday to announce the first Classic Car Appreciation Day at the State House. "Four classic cars will be at the State House for the governor's announcement," the release said. The governor’s newser Tuesday was to announce that Classic Car Appreciation Day is scheduled for Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. More than 200 classic cars are expected in the State House lots, an event free and open to the public. The event will also honor Rhode Island classic car enthusiasts and the local car enthusiast organizations for contributions to local charities. The day is billed as a cruise and will include cruising music and food and beverage concessions, the governor's office stated. All proceeds will benefit local charities. -- projo.com staff writer Michael P. McKinney |
