On the subject of DOT, the state transportation agency has lined up its interns for the summer and there are a number of familiar last names there too, though agency spokeswoman Dana Alexander Nolfe said the department does not, as a rule, talk about who is related to whom within the agency.

Hourly pay for the jobs ranges from $8.50 for season highway maintenance workers to $9 for engineering assistants to up to a high of $13 for student assistants in civil engineering and public affairs, for example.

“This summer, invest in your future,” says a DOT flyer. “This program will allow college students a unique opportunity to work alongside transportation professionals in such areas as highway, traffic, bridge design, construction, environmental protection, historic preservation, landscaping … road and bridge maintenance.” The list goes on.

“Why not have a great job with some of the best in Rhode Island?”

Nolfe said the job openings were posted on the DOT Web site, in city and town halls and at a variety of colleges here and in neighboring states, including the University of Rhode Island, the University of Maine and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. She said “state residents and academic standing are given preferences,” with a minimum 2.5 grade point average required.

“Asked about the mix, she said 75 percent have no relatives inside the DOT; 43.2 percent of this year’s placements are what she described as “female/minority.”

A briefing memo said: “Returning students, co-op students or upper classmen are placed in the higher salary level ($13 hourly) for a 35/40 hour work week” and “once placed, students are given preference to return year to year or enter the academic year co-op program for civil engineering, landscape, IT, communications … business affairs.” The $8.50-an-hour seasonal highway workers include Kenneth Iavarone and Sean O’Connor.

The $9-an-hour engineering interns include Kristen Capaldi, Amanda Corrao, Andrew Dowding, Christopher Gagnon, Ross Grimshaw, Toni Janik, Darren L. Lopes Jr., Christopher Monteliberto-Spirito, Nicole Moscarelli, Joseph Ottaviano and Brendan Rowley.

In the $13-an-hour category are planning assistant Jennifer Farhoumand; public affairs assistants Tempest Burrell, Erin Kilcline and Edward Stravato; and management-information aides Timothy Colletto, Ryan Gardiner, Megan Savaria and Timothy Shawver; and environmental assistants Karen Quinn and Megan Wright.

The $13-an-hour student engineering jobs went to Asad Akinfolarin, Akinyemi Akinsinde, Lucelene Almeida, Daniel Coffland, Kyle Gagnon, Cameron Gottlieb, Daniel Hartman, Justin McCoy, Joshua Mombourquette, William Pratt, James Quiah, Stephen Ricci, Iziarh Roberts Jr. and Taylor Wender.

Now, I am all for public exposure, but is it really necessary to find out what kids are doing internships?
