Providence Mayor David N. Cicilline is about to become a member of the Democratic National Committee. Cicilline gets the post by virtue of his election as vice president of the National Conference of Democratic Mayors. Other members of the mayors’ group who have posts on the DNC are Shirley Franklin, of Atlanta, and Kwame Kilpatrick, of Detroit. Other Rhode Island members of the DNC include Bill Lynch, the state party chairman; Frank Montanaro, president of the state AFL-CIO and the party’s national committeeman; Edna O’Neill Mattson, Democratic national committeewoman; and Democratic fundraiser and Bill Clinton confidante Mark Weiner. Cicilline says he intends to be vocal about urban issues, particularly as Democrats draft the party’s platform in the run-up to next summer’s 2008 Democratic National Convention, slated to be held in Denver. “I’ll be concentrating on advocating issues important to cities,” Cicilline said. |
