When House Speaker Murphy welcomed two New England Patriots to the House chamber last week, was he serious in implying that the football players had come to Rhode Island on a house-hunting expedition? No, as it turns out. The players — starting offensive lineman Matt Light and reserve offensive lineman Wesley Britt — were invited to the State House “to observe a session and observe the political process,” House spokesman Larry Berman said. That didn’t stop Murphy from joking that the state’s income-tax cut for the high wage earners, passed by the General Assembly last year, had piqued the players’ interest. “After passing our flat-tax rate last year, we’ve been seeing many people from Massachusetts looking to relocate to Rhode Island,” Murphy deadpanned during Tuesday’s House session. “We do have two high-income earners from the state of Massachusetts who are coming here today, hopefully looking at some homes in Rhode Island to help us with our economy.” Berman said the visit came about because Murphy and Light — who lives in Foxboro, Mass., by the way — share a mutual friend.
