Still looking for the perfect 2007 calendar? A calendar available now at CVS stores features works by Rhode Island artists. Proceeds from the calendar’s sale support the Healing Arts Program at Lifespan Hospitals.

“With this calendar, all Rhode Islanders will have the opportunity to experience the talent of our local artists while, at the same time, helping a great program,” Governor Carcieri said in a news release. “The calendars have been a popular item at the gift shops at Rhode Island Hospital, Hasbro Children’s Hospital and the State House. With select CVS stores in Rhode Island now carrying these items, I am pleased that more of our citizens will be able to purchase these attractive calendars that show off our state’s natural beauty.”

Among the works of art featured in the calendar, which costs $14.95, are “Beacon Rock,” a watercolor by Richard Grosvenor, the 2006 winner of the Scenes of Rhode Island competition; “Castle Hill,” a watercolor by Gail Armstrong, the 2005 winner; and “Narragansett Beach,” a black-and-white print photograph by Howard Rubenstein, the 2004 winner.

The Scenes of Rhode Island competition was established by Governor and Mrs. Carcieri in cooperation with the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts as a way to showcase Rhode Island’s natural beauty and the work of local artists.

The funds generated by calendar sales “will allow the Healing Arts Program to grow and reach more children,” Carcieri said. “The power of art in the healing and recovery process is enormous, especially for young patients. Doctors, nurses, parents, and the patients themselves have seen the therapeutic effects of focusing on an art project.”
