The Providence Phoenix, the city's alternative weekly newspaper, has endorsed the proposal to bring a casino to West Warwick and a host of Democratic candidates, including U.S. Senate candidate Sheldon Whitehouse, in today's issue.

The casino question is "a vote on the future of how the state develops economically..." reads the paper's endorsement of Question 1. "We recognize that in contemplating the future there is always an element of uncertainty. But on balance, we favor the idea of casino gambling and we urge a 'yes' vote."

In the state's other hot race, the Phoenix "enthusiastically" endorsed Whitehouse for U.S. Senate over incumbent Republican Lincoln Chafee, saying:

"Although the Chafee name is synonymous with public service in Rhode Island — and for good reason — the reactionary and disastrous course of Republicans in Washington compels the need for change in the US Senate."

Other endorsements include the following Democratic candidates:

-- Lt. Gov. Charles Fogarty for governor
-- Reps. James Langevin and Patrick Kennedy for Congress
-- Elizabeth Roberts for lieutenant governor
-- Incumbent Patrick Lynch for attorney general
-- Frank Caprio for general treasurer
-- Incumbent David N. Cicilline for Providence mayor

The only Republican endorsed was Susan Stenhouse, who is challenging North Providence Mayor Ralph Mollis for secretary of state.

Another example of short sighted thinking from the Phoenix. The best minds they have there are Phillipe and Jorge.
