One Christmas tree isn’t enough for the State House this year.

Neither is two or three. This year Governor Carcieri and his wife, Sue, are putting all their energy into decking the State House halls; there will be a total of nine trees in and around the Capitol for Christmas.

The festivities begin Friday evening outside the State House. First will be the lighting of eight trees on the south, or city side at 5:30 p.m. Music will be provided by the St. Andrew’s School choir, of Barrington, on the steps of the State House facing downtown. WPRI-Channel 12 news anchors Steve Aveson and Karen Adams will introduce the Carcieris.

Inside the State House will be an artificial tree decorated with snowflake and icicle crystals donated by Swarovski jewelers. After the outdoor lighting, visitors can come inside, where children can visit Santa and Mrs. Claus. (Word on the street is that the Bristol couple playing the parts prefers to remain anonymous, but Political Scene has been assured they are not politicians.) Cider and gingerbread cookies will be provided, and there will be a storyteller and a holiday craft table.

The eight trees outside have been donated by eight tree farms across the state.
