Kara A. Picozzi is scheduled to begin work today as the new deputy director of community outreach and public relations for the state judiciary.

The job, which has a base salary of $51,952, has seen a lot of turnover this year. Carol A. Costa left in January to join a public relations firm, and Lisa Dinerman left in October to join a law firm.

Picozzi, 37, of Lincoln, is already a state employee. Since 1999, she has been working for the William M. Davies Jr. Career and Technical High School, in Lincoln, and assigned to Lincoln High School as a school-based coordinator. That job involves assisting students in career exploration, participating in professional development workshops and networking with businesses about career opportunities.

From 1997-1999, Picozzi worked for the Rhode Island Skills Commission, serving as a career coordinator at Smithfield High School. And from 1992 to 1997, she was a community organizer for the Providence Mayor’s Council on Drug and Alcohol Abuse. She graduated from Salve Regina University in 1990 with a bachelor’s degree in the administration of justice.

Courts spokesman Craig N. Berke said Picozzi was chosen from about 100 applicants because of her education background and experience working in career development. In her new job, she will be in charge of the Justice Rules program, which educates school children about the judicial system and promotes careers in the judiciary and related fields.
