There's no shortage of irony this election season.

Today, the Sheldon Whitehouse campaign began airing a new ad criticizing his opponent, Senator Lincoln Chafee, and national Republicans for running attack ads. That's right -- the new ad attacks Chafee for running attack ads.

"Months ago, the national Republicans laid out their game plan," says the narrator in the 30-second spot. "Spend millions digging up dirt on Democrats. Make personal attacks. Be unrelentingly negative. And Linc Chafee has followed the Republican plan, launching one attack after another."

There's a difference between throwing mud and pointing out that your opponent is throwing mud. Whitehouse is absolutely right to point out that Chafee's tactics are taken right from Rove's playbook. Chafee is ducking the real issues because he knows that on the real issues, Rhode Island is with Jack Reed, Sheldon Whitehouse and the Democrats.
